Hiking for all bodies

Hiking is an outdoor activity that's perfect for all body types and fitness levels. It's a great way to connect with nature, get some exercise, and improve your mental and physical health. Unfortunately, many people feel excluded from hiking due to unrealistic beauty standards and the belief that only fit and slender bodies can participate. Keep reading to explore why hiking is for all bodies and get some tips and tricks for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Why hiking is suitable for all sizes and fitness levels

One of the best things about hiking is its inclusivity. Hiking is suitable for people of all sizes and fitness levels because it's a low-impact exercise that doesn't require any special skills or equipment. In fact, the Annapolis Valley is home to plenty of beginner-friendly hikes with easy terrain and shorter distances. Hiking is also an excellent way to build strength, endurance, and flexibility, and it can help reduce stress and anxiety. Best of all, hiking can be enjoyed in a group or solo, so it's a perfect activity for socializing or taking some time for yourself.

Start slowly and listen to your body

If you're a beginner or haven't hiked in a while, start with short and easy trails. As you get more comfortable, you can gradually increase the distance and level of difficulty. It’s also important to remember that hiking is not a race. Move with a pace that enables you to keep up a conversation. This will help with building confidence and reduce the risk of overexertion and injury.

Take breaks often and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. There's no shame in taking breaks along the way. Listen to your body and take breaks when you need to. You'll enjoy the hike more if you don't overexert yourself. Plus, there are countless reasons to stop for a few moments, aside from catching your breath. Take the time to enjoy the scenery, snap a few photos, and soak in the beauty of nature.

Dress for success

The right gear is essential for any hiking adventure, regardless if you’re a beginner or someone who’s hit the trails too many times to count. A comfortable and supportive pair of hiking shoes or boots is a must, along with breathable and moisture-wicking clothing that fits well and allows for a range of motion. Other essential gear includes a backpack, water bottle, and snacks.

Even on hot summer days, if you’re in tick territory, consider clothing options such as long, breathable pants or shirts with long sleeves. A hat is also great, as is sunscreen!

It may take a few hikes to find what clothing and gear work for you, and of course the distance and intensity of the trail will also influence what you need. Take the time ahead of your hike to plan for all the elements, and you’ll be on the road to success!

Make it social

Hiking with a friend or group can make the experience more enjoyable and motivating. These social aspects of hiking also help to build accountability and take away the intimidation factor that we sometimes face when trying something new. Who knows - maybe you’ll even make some new hiking friends along the way!

However, even if you’re not into the social side of hiking, it’s a great habit to let someone know where you’re hiking, when you expect to return, and what to do if you don’t check in post-hike. This can either be by telling a friend or family member, or leaving a note on your car.

No matter your size or fitness level, hiking is a great way to get outdoors, get some exercise, and clear your mind. Don't let the fear of being too out of shape or not reflecting what you think a hiker should look like (been there!) hold you back. With the right attitude and preparation, hiking can be a fun and rewarding activity for anyone.
