5 benefits of hiking

Hiking is a great way to get moving and explore nature. But aside from just the enjoyment of this favourite outdoor activity, there are loads of benefits that go along with it. Here are 5 of those benefits!

1 It's great for physical health

Hiking is a great way to get your body moving. It can range from high to low impact cardio, while helping to improve a number of physical health outcomes including: balance, reducing the risk of heart disease, alleviating the symptoms of arthritis, and even improving bone and muscle strength!

2 It's great for mental health

Countless studies have shown that being active outdoors, such as hiking, is great for mental health. It helps to improve mood, lessen anxiety and depression, and we get access to that oh-so-sweet oxytocin (also known as the love hormone)! Of course, hiking won’t solve more severe instances of depression, but it does help with lower levels.

3 It allows you to (re)connect with nature

Speaking of nature-induced hormones, spending time among the trees not only makes us feel good, but it also enhances our bond with the natural world. This leads us to advocate for better trails and outdoor recreational spaces, as well as environmental protection. And these days, we could certainly use for of that!

4 It improves sleep

When you hike, you move your body. And that mixed with all the great sights, sounds and smells of nature can actually lead to a good night’s sleep And who doesn’t want that! We also absorb Vitamin D while on the trail, which contributes to better sleep.

5 It's a great social or solo activity

There are very few activities that can be equally enjoyed alone or with company, but hiking is definitely one of them! The versatility of hiking is one of the reasons it is a much beloved activity. Though solo hiking may take sometime to do, once you build up your confidence on the trail, you’ll likely appreciate the time on your own.

Of course, there are plenty more benefits to hiking - but you can’t argue with these 5! No matter your motivation, One Star Hiking is ready to hit the trails with you. And if you’re ready to get started check out our upcoming hikes or start planning your private adventure!
